Extension on the Backswing Think Wider

Good fundamentals are the key to playing better golf. Today we want to concentrate on one of the most important keys-good extension. You see this in the PGA Tour players, Champions Tour players, LPGA Tour players and all the top amateurs.

Fortunately, our teachers stressed good extension and helped us become very good players. Proper extension will help you hit the ball farther, straighter and more consistently.

Most of the students that come to us for help tend to lift their arms straight up and cock their wrists too soon. When they do that they tend to come down on the ball too sharply and take big divots instead of being able to take shallow divots and swing thru their shots effortlessly.

How to Ditch Your High Weak Slice

This tip appeared in the June 2009 issue of Golf Magazine.

This easy drill fixes a major power-robbing mistake: crossing the line
This story is for you if...

» You try to swing back as far as you can to generate power.
» You often feel your right elbow flying out in your backswing.
» You can actually see the clubhead veering out at the top of your swing.

The Fault

You don't feel like your backswing is long enough to give you the yards you need, so you lift your right elbow to bring the club back even farther. This causes your arms to swing way past the point when they should naturally stop. Now you're officially across the line (clubhead pointed right of the target at the top), and headed for inconsistent contact and those misses that go way high and to the right.

Improving in Golf and Making It Stick

As a young player in high school, I remember asking one of my golf instructors, "How much do I need to practice to get better?" More specifically, I wanted to know how many repetitions or drills did I need to do to improve my technique and make it "stick."

I never received an answer that satisfied me. However, I just read a book that might hold the answer. In Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell provides evidence that success and achievement are NOT due primarily to intelligence or ambition. Gladwell argues that the true story of success is much more interesting and is dependent on variables such as timing of birth, culture, and family. His book investigates the success of athletes, lawyers, airline pilots, and even the Beatles and Bill Gates, and finds a common denominator among all of them. Like the old joke goes, How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice. In Outliers, Gladwell tells us exactly how much practice.

More Distance for Dads

One thing all of us are looking for is to get more distance off the tee.  There are things we can do to achieve some of this.  A little bit of stretching daily can give us more range of motion that can create club head speed.  Also getting a driver with proper loft and shaft flex can really make a difference.   Believe it or not but playing the right ball also can give us a few yards.  Here are a few swing tips that I would suggest.

» Grip:  make it slightly stronger by rotating hands a little bit to the right for a right handed golfer.

Practice with a Purpose

I have worked with many different types of students and they all ask the same question: “Why do I hit the ball better at the driving range than on the course?” How many times do we hit a bad shot on the golf course, drop another ball and then hit the shot of the day. Another comment I hear from many of my students is: “I wish I could take a second shot all the time. My second shots are always much better.” There is in fact a reason why we always seem to improve when we take that mulligan.
