Snedeker beats Stanley in shocking playoff at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO — Kyle Stanley was so good for 71 holes at Torrey Pines that his performance drew comparisons with Tiger Woods.
When it was over, he was mentioned in the same breath as Jean Van de Velde.
Brandt Snedeker won the Farmers Insurance Open in a playoff that never seemed possible when Stanley, who led by seven shots early in the final round, hit a sand wedge into the water and three-putted for triple bogey on the 18th hole.

Rock surprises Woods at HSBC Golf Championship in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Unheralded Englishman Robert Rock seemed to be headed for a time warp Sunday against Tiger Woods, who showed signs of returning to top form in the first three rounds of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Instead, it was a Rocky horror show for Tiger.

Ping's G20 driver made its public debut last week at the PGA Tour's FedEx St. Jude Classic. (The club will be available at retail in mid-August.) Three pros—defending champ Lee Westwood, Kirk Triplett and D.J. Brigman—added it to their arsenal for Thursday's first round. Expect to see more G20 drivers on Tour throughout the summer.

Jonathan Byrd has one-shot lead at Kapalua

KAPALUA, Hawaii — A new PGA Tour season began with a familiar name atop the leaderboard Friday at Kapalua.
Defending champion Jonathan Byrd ran off six straight birdies early in his round, then stalled on the back nine and settled for a 6-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead in the Tournament of Champions.

Golf no longer has a set offseason

KAPALUA, Hawaii — Nine players - that's one-third of the 27-man field at Kapalua - were together only a month ago at the Chevron World Challenge. A week later, eight players were in Florida for the Shark Shootout. They went home for the holidays, then packed their clubs and flew across the Pacific Ocean for the Tournament of Champions for the 2012 season.
